Salsa culture in Korea
Korean salsa is club-focused rather than academy-based. Even the initial learning of salsa primarily happens through classes offered by dance clubs rather than academies.
Many people also have their first encounter with salsa through these clubs. By joining dance clubs via online searches or friend recommendations and learning salsa, it naturally leads to visiting salsa bars with fellow club members. As a result, it's common to witness club members dancing together at salsa bars.
In Korean salsa bars, the majority dances On2 (NY Style). While On1 used to be dominant until around 2010, On2 has become the mainstream since the 2010s, with the majority now enjoying On2. Those who prefer On1 are a very small minority.
Korean salsa bars play a mix of salsa, bachata, and occasionally some merengue and cha-cha music. Salsa and bachata are played almost equally, while the frequency of merengue and cha-cha music is very low. (Before the COVID-19 pandemic, salsa music had a higher proportion, but currently, the proportions of salsa and bachata music are similar.)
Kizomba is often played only on specific days of the week in certain salsa bars. Kizomba also revolves around dance clubs. Therefore, on the days when Kizomba club's regular meetings are held, the music revolves around Kizomba at the salsa bars where the meeting takes place.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday are crowded. On the other hand, there are not many from Monday to Thursday. So many places take a day off from Monday to Thursday. If you visit on weekdays, check if they are closed.
